A Guide to Puff Backs

The frigid cold weather has hit, and all of our furnaces are now working overtime to keep our houses warmer than the 10 degree outside temperature. Puff backs are a common problem associated with this time of year. Having knowledge of the problem and what to do if it happens is the best way to be a prepared homeowner.

What is a puff back, and what can cause it?

A puff back is a furnace or fireplace malfunction that causes debris and soot to be pushed into our homes. Vapors can build up and then the ignition fires and creates a small explosion within your furnace. Or your fireplace can form a blockage, forcing contents to “puff back” into your home. No matter the cause of the puff back, you will notice smoke in the air of your home and/or an accumulation of soot on the contents of your home.

How can I prevent a puff back from happening to me?

It is best to have your furnace regularly inspected and maintained. If you have a fireplace, be sure to get your chimneys periodically and professionally cleaned to prevent blockage.

What do I do if I have a puff back?

If you notice the signs of a puff back, temporarily turn off your furnace until the problem can be located. Next, notify your insurance agent.
